Delivering height safety solutions to Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter

“Grant and the team at Height Safety Engineering have supported us for eight years.  They have raised our safety standard to make sure we not only meet health and safety standards, but exceed them.

This level of safety is only possible through the support provided by Height Safety Engineering and we now have the best gear possible that suits our unique working conditions.”

Barry Vincent – Base Manager – Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter

The Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter pilots and crew work in some incredibly dangerous situations. The rescue helicopter working environment is unique and quite literally the lives of the crew and the people they are saving can be on the line.

Height Safety Engineering has partnered with Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter to help ensure the safety of the crew and people they are helping.

Rotorua Base Manager Barry Vincent cannot speak highly enough of the contribution that Height Safety Engineering has made to the safety standards and equipment at Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter.

“We have worked with Grant and the team at Height Safety Engineering for the last eight years. They supply equipment, check and certify our equipment for compliance as well as develop purpose built safety systems.”

Through working together Height Safety Engineering and Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter determined that there should be a better system for the crew to attach to the helicopter in rescue operations. After some extensive searches they realised there was nothing in existence that provided the level of safety and assurance that Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter was after.

Grant from Height Safety Engineering applied his technical ability and knowledge of height safety environments and devised a safer way for harnessing and winching in rescue helicopters.

With an innovative solution in mind Grant worked with safety equipment manufacturer Miller to produce a prototype. Grant and Barry tested the prototype, refined it and after several iterations have developed a purpose built harness and clip release system designed specifically for working from helicopters.

The new system is manufactured to the necessary standards and certified.  Now 16 harness and clip release systems are being produced to be used at helicopter rescue bases in Rotorua, Taupo, Palmerston North, Hamilton and Tauranga.

Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter is one of five bases operated under Phillips Search & Rescue Trust. They all now have a higher level of safety by adopting a system which is well in excess of the safety requirements of the Civil Aviation Association and Worksafe.

“We have the peace of mind that we have the best gear possible.”
